Gujarat Discovery Onboard the Deccan Odyssey

As you head north from Mumbai to Gujarat, on board the Decan Odyssey which is the epitome of luxury, indulge in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the outstanding Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park in Vadodara, and the iconic Jain temples in Palitana. Search for beautiful Asiatic lions in the Gir Forest National Park, and the wild ass, which can be found in the Little Ran of Kutch. Meander to Modhera’s Sun Temple, take in a first-class and exclusive wine tour from one of India’s finest wineries, before taking a leisurely stroll along the Godavari Ghats.

Day 1: Arrival to Mumbai

When you arrive to the exciting city of Mumbai, you will be met at the airport by your local Zoom Travel Tours representative and be quickly escorted to your hotel to relax and recuperate from your journey.

Day 2: Mumbai

After a restful evening, you’ll be refreshed and ready to explore Mumbai’s multi-faceted historical and invigorating present-day architecture. You’ll be visiting some of the city’s most popular landmarks, including India’s largest open-air laundry, Dhobi Ghat, and the hectic Crawford Market. Mumbai has an unmistakably British flair due to its long relationship with the United Kingdom, and there’s no missing its charming traditional ambiance, particularly when visiting the city’s Gothic, Saracenic and Muslim buildings.

Day 3: To Vadodara

After a tasty breakfast, you’ll be ready to sail over to Elephanta Island, home of the 6th century “City of Caves.” This remarkable venue boasts an impressive collection of rock art that has been fashioned in honor of Shiva. In the evening, you will be escorted to Mumbai’s Chattrapati Shivaji Terminal, where you will board your train (the Deccan Odyssey) and begin your incredible luxury adventure! Day 4: Vadodara

You’ll be waking up in Vadodara and after a delicious breakfast you’ll visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Champaner-Pavagadh Archeaological Park. This interesting complex of ancient historical and cultural landmarks is still in the process of being explored and excavated. You’ll visit the remains of the 16th century capital city of Gujarat, and an impressively well-preserved Hindu hill fortress. After a tasty onboard lunch you’ll visit a magnificent collection of artwork at the internationally acclaimed Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum. You’ll end this exciting day with a relaxing high tea at the splendorous Laxmi Vilas Palace, where perhaps you’ll catch a glimpse of the royal family, who still resides there to this day.

Day 5: Palitana

When you arrive to Bhavnagar, a vibrant and bustling industrial city, you’ll head off to the fascinating marble temples of Jain, located in Palitana. Palitana is home to almost 900 temples that have been painstakingly carved from ancient marble and is considered to be the most sacred pilgrimage sites of the Jain community. You’ll enjoy a filling and tasty lunch onboard the train, and in the afternoon you’ll continue on to the national park at Sasan Gir, where tomorrow you’ll come face-to-face with the thrilling and exquisite Asiatic lions who live there.

Day 6: Sasan Gir / Somnathpur

You’ll spend an unforgettable morning visiting Gir Forest National Park where you’ll be guided by a trained animal specialist who will explain everything you ever wanted to know about the elusive Asiatic lions, as well as a wide variety of other amazing wildlife such as sloths, monkeys, boars, antelopes, leopards, hyenas and the rare monitor lizard (also known as the Komodo Dragon.) After the exhilarating morning at the park, you’ll wind down over a delicious lunch that ends with a traditional tribal dance presentation. You’ll continue onto the Somnath Temple and enjoy the drive as you pass through quaint villages and towns. Once there, you’ll be able to visit one of the 12 Indian Jyortilingas (representations of Lord Shiva). In the evening, you’ll return to the Deccan Odyssey and enjoy the sunset and a rejuvenating cocktail while awaiting a scrumptious onboard dinner.

Day 7: Little Rann of Kutch

Today you’ll make a safari trip to Little Rann of Kutch, a biosphere reserve and world heritage site located in the desert of Gujarat. You’ll visit the world renowned Indian Wild Ass refuge and have great opportunities to photograph a huge variety of water birds. A bit later, you’ll go to the village of Rann where you will meet people from the town, including the Agarias, (saltpanners) toiling as they dry out the salt that has been mined, and children from a local school who will chatter with you about their lives and ask you all about yours. Later, inspired by your enjoyable day, you will return to the Deccan Odyssey for your dinner and relaxation.

Day 8: Modhera & Patan

Today you’re off to Modhera where you’ll take an excursion to one of the most spectacular architectural structures in India, the Sun Temple, built in the 11th century. You’ll also go to a step well, Rani-ka-Vav, a wonderful example of subterranean water-management development. From there, you’ll visit the Patola house, where you will observe members of the Salvi family create their traditional silk garment called “Sarees.” You’ll have a delicious lunch aboard the Deccan Odyssey, and a relaxing afternoon on the train as you continue on towards a morning arrival in Nashik.

Day 9: Nashik

You’ll wake up in Nashik, and after a hearty breakfast onboard, you’ll travel to Pandu Leni, to explore one of India’s oldest Jain and Buddhist cave temples. After climbing down from thecaves, you’ll be driven to Grover Zampa Vineyards, where you’ll enjoy a VIP tour of the distinguished Indian wine manufacturing plant. A professional sommelier will guide you through a delicious and informative wine-tasting. In the evening, disembark for a walk along the Godavari ghats where you can observe sacred Hindu rituals related to birth, death and initiation.

Day 10: To Mumbai

You’ll arrive to Mumbai this morning; it’s the end of your amazing train journey. You’ll be met by our professional transportation service and be escorted back to your hotel for a day of relaxation and preparations for your onward flight.

Day 11 : Depart Mumbai

You’ll be escorted to the airport for your onward flight.
